Community Development

Current and Ongoing

Community Needs Assessment

Un Mundo recognizes the importance of assessment and evaluation in the success of our work. For this reason, in 2008 we compiled various baseline evaluative interviews to assess the existing conditions, needs and assets of the seven villages in the Cangrejal River Basin. These assessments serve many purposes, which vary in each community, some measuring changes over time and others assessing existing conditions, providing a basis for program and project development. To date, Un Mundo has completed assessments in three communities and is currently compiling the data. Throughout the remainder of 2009, Un Mundo will continue to implement the assessments in the remaining four villages in the Cangrejal Watershed Basin. Upon completion of all current research, we hope that the data compiled will be a resource for Un Mundo, other organizations working in the area and particularly the local communities.

Proposed

Community Mapping Project

In conjunction with the Community Assessment and Census, Un Mundo will also be initiating a Community Mapping Project. This multi-purpose project will increase the geographic understanding of the region, to teach technical mapping skills, and to build a graphic library of maps for all of the communities of the watershed. We believe that the end product will be an important resource for organizations working in the area and more importantly, a powerful tool for local governing bodies. In addition to these practical learning objectives, this series of workshops will explore cultural identity, the concept of space as construct of self and a visioning process that will examine the type of community residents of El Pital envision for themselves. We hope this aspect of the workshop will cultivate more connection to the each other and the environment, while also increasing cohesion and community pride.

Past

Reforestation

In 1998, Un Mundo helped reforest El Pital and the surrounding area. Some 6,000 native specie saplings were donated to locals for personal use and for planting along riparian lands. The purpose of the reforestation project was to return flora and fauna to its natural state, halt erosion, return flow to streams, and introduce the local population to the principles of forest conservation and management.
